Our Neighborhood

Springs of Grace is located in a Shreveport community called Sunset Acres. In fact, our original name was Sunset Acres Baptist Church. Our neighborhood is a predominately African-American, low-income, high-risk neighborhood. The high school dropout rate is notoriously high in this area, and the crime rate is substantial. But to us, Sunset Acres is just an area full of neighbors whom we love and desire to love better. Some of the ways we endeavor to love our neighbor in Sunset Acres include

Monday Night Club

For nearly 20 years, we have been privileged to open our church gym on Monday nights for young men and women in our neighborhood to play basketball and engage in Bible study. The doors open each Monday at 6 pm.

After-school Tutoring

In November of 2009, God opened the door for us to begin tutoring the kids in Sunset Acres after school hours. Primarily, we desired to give them time and space to do their homework and then to offer help in areas of difficulty. This door into their lives also gave us an opportunity to share God’s love for them through the Gospel. God has brought many children into our lives so that we might share Jesus by serving and speaking the truth in love. He also opened the door into our local elementary school by connecting us with kids who attend there (see S.T.A.M.P. below).

S.T.A.M.P.

Sunset Tutoring and Mentoring Program began when we saw a need at Sunset Acres Elementary School and had the opportunity to serve. Our goal was simply to serve in whatever capacity the administration, faculty, and staff needed us. Principal Stacey Jamison warmly welcomed us into the school and let us know how we could best help. Many of our church members act as room parents, tutors, and mentors at the school, and we have been tremendously blessed by the relationships that have formed.

Summer CLC Program

Our gym is open to children Mondays through Thursdays every summer for basketball, table games, Bible study, and all kinds of fellowship. We average 70 neighborhood children every day and love to see the gym full. Our summer intern ministry has shaped many young men and women for ministry, whether as members of a local church, ordained ministers, or missionaries to the world. In recent years especially, Springs of Grace interns have served as the lifeblood for our summer CLC program, leading Bible studies and building relationships with neighborhood children.
